Walking Unconverted

Walking Unconverted
Sometimes as believers we can assume that because we have proclaimed Christ and are proclaimed Christians that we are in good standing. Let’s not be so sure. Matthew 7:21-23, the scripture that should be an eye- opener for all believers. In this scripture the Lord reveals that there will be many that proclaim His name, there will be many that will even do the work of the ministry. He will say to them that he never knew them. Do I have your attention? I hope so, because in this hour we can’t afford to miss truth. We can’t afford to miss something that could cause us to forfeit the Kingdom of God.
Today we will explore the topic of proclaimed believers walking unconverted, using the example of the disciple Peter. Do you know what conversion is? Peter’s life and interactions with Jesus give us a huge help. We will discuss the importance of conversion and the danger of walking unconverted. Let’s take a peek at Peter's character, his moments of weakness, and the hints that he was walking unconverted. We will discover the many open doors that were giving the adversary an opportunity potentially to accuse Peter and sift him as wheat. We will also discuss Jesus’ simple prayer for Peter and why that prayer is important for us today.
Peter, a disciple of Christ had his ups and downs walking as a believer. Peter was called by Jesus as a disciple and an apostle. He accompanied Jesus on many ministry trips in which Jesus preached the Gospel, healed the sick, raised the dead and cast out demons. The 12 disciples were in training mode. They were learning how to do the work of the ministry with Jesus himself.
Yet, Peter according to Jesus, was unconverted. In Luke 22: 32 Jesus told Peter that Satan desired to sift him as wheat. Jesus prayed that Peter’s faith would not fail and that once he was converted, he should strengthen his brethren. Whoa, how could Peter not be converted? How could the brethren, the other disciples need strengthening too? This one statement revealed that Peter had some open doors and faith would be necessary to maintain his walk. It is also apparent from this statement that the other disciples were also weak in faith and needed strengthening, they too may have had open doors that may have allowed the enemy to cause havoc
. Peter was zealous for Christ; remember he was the disciple who told Jesus that he would go to prison for him and even die for him. (Luke 22:33) Peter was also the disciple that correctly answered the question, who do you say that I am. Peter rightly confessed Christ, he told him that he was the Christ, the son of the living God. (Matthew 16:13-17)
Jesus told us that Peter would be the rock upon which he built his church. Wow, what a statement for the son of the Living God to make! We know that Jesus saw something special in Peter as I am sure that he saw in all of the disciples. He saw something that would be useful for building His church. Peter would be instrumental in the building of the church. ( Matthew 16:18)
Yet we see some moments in Peter’s life that make us cringe. Every disciple has these moments; moments that we are not proud of, embarrassing moments in our daily disciple walk. We can be thankful that Peter’s moments are in scripture to help us. Let’s look at some key indicators/open doors that show us that Peter was in fact walking unconverted.
Open Doors that indicate Peter was not converted
Jesus told Peter that he was concerned with the things of man/ mind not renewed
Matthew 16:23- Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.”
Romans 12:2- 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
This scripture is eye opening. We know that things of man have to do with things of the world. The Bible tells us that we are not to love the world or the things of it. We are also told in scripture that lovers of the world are enemies of God. (1 John, 2: 15-17, James 4:4-8) Something in Peter had him concerned for the things of men. This concern was not pleasing to Jesus, so much so that he took the time to openly rebuke Peter. Peter mind had not been transformed. He was conforming, bending to the world. Open Door # 1
Peter cuts off the ear of the Malchus, servant of the high priest. Anger/lack of self-control/impulsive/malice
Ephesians 4:31-32- 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:32 And be ye kind one to another.
Ephesians 4:26- 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil.
2 Peter 1:3-8- 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Colossians 3:8-11-8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
The chief priests and elders sent men to arrest Jesus. Peter’s act of cutting off Malchus’ ear was quick, impulsive and malicious. The act showed that he was angry and wanted to take revenge or even protect Jesus. Whatever the reason, Peter was out of line. He was not showing the fruit of God’s spirit. The truth is the act showed a lack of self- control. The act revealed a part of Peter that was not pleasing to the Lord. Peter’s flesh was not under submission. Jesus told Peter to put away his sword and quickly healed the man’s ear. Open Door #2
Peter’s actions and words did not align.
Matthew 26:33- 33 Peter answered and said unto him, though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
Luke 22:33- 33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
Luke 22:54-57- 54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
Matthew 16:24-24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
1 Peter 1:15-16-15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Peter’s words would seem to indicate his complete dedication and commitment to Jesus, and His mission. Yet, we know that when the times became difficult, Peter actually cowered before the crowd when asked if he was a member of Jesus’ group. He was not in fact ready or willing to be marked as a follower of Christ at this difficult moment. Open Door #3
Peter was ashamed of Christ
Jesus tells Peter that he will deny him.
Luke 22:34- 34 Jesus[c] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”
Luke 22: 56 - 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.”
Mark 8:38- 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
Romans 1:16-16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is he power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Door # 4
It was probably very fulfilling to walk with Christ. Peter had the privilege to be close to Christ and learn from him. Yet, it was obvious that it was not going to be easy when people joined the religious social mob and decided that not only was Christ the perceived enemy, but potentially all of those who were willing and bold enough to continue to carry Christ’s message, the Gospel.
Peter lied.
Luke 22: 58 58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
Revelation 21:8- 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Proverbs 6:16-19-There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,18 a heart that devises Wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Peter sat in a crowd and refused to tell the truth when asked if he was a part of Jesus’ team. Telling the truth even in times where you might be singled out or even ostracized is a necessary part of walking discipled. Peter unfortunately, allowed fear to get the best of him, causing him to lie not once, but three times. Can you imagine, the rock of the church was faltering and faltering horribly in a very sticky situation. Open Door #5
Peter had fears. Peter had a fear of man.
Hidden Reason why Peter denied Christ
Proverbs 29:25- 25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.
Jeremiah 17:5- Thus saith the Lord; cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.
Galatians 1:10- 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
Matthew 10:28- 28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
2 Timothy 1:7-8- 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God.
Was Peter afraid to pick up his cross and follow the Lord? After all Jesus had been arrested and the disciples were aware that Jesus must die. At the crucial moment, Peter shrank before the crowd, he cowered before the people. Maybe he worried that the same fate that was soon to take the life of Jesus could also be his same fate? Could he have been afraid of being ostracized from the community, or even the wider community at large? No matter the reason, it is clear that Peter was afraid. Open Door #6
Peter had a Cowardice/ Timidity issue. These issues are also linked to fear & lack of faith.
Matthew 8:23-27-23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
During Jesus’ time teaching the disciples, he often asked them, Why are you afraid? Why do you fear? In Matthew 8:23-27 he demonstrated that fear ( cowardice/timidity) had no place in the midst of a storm. He demonstrated that faith was required to overcome the storm and necessary to command it into calmness.
Strong’s Concordance definition of Fear- (G1167)- timidity, fearfulness, cowardice Webster’s definition of cowardice & timidity: Timidity- lacking in courage or self-confidence; lacking in boldness or determination Cowardice- lack of courage or firmness of purpose Open Door #7
Peter had a love issue. Love was not perfected in him. He had not fully embraced perfect love
1 John 4:18-1918 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us.
Peter was not able to shake his fears. Boldness was required in this hour. Perfect love, the love that rests on the inside of us is the same love that will allow us to cast out any and all fears. Peter had not yet fully grabbed a hold to this. Open Door #8
Peter had a faith issue. Lack of faith/unbelief is often linked to fear in scripture.
James 1:8- 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
Mark 4:37-41- 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
Peter was wavering; he seemed unsure at this point; he was hiding; his belief was shaky. Only one could guess what his thoughts might have been during the crucial time of Jesus’ arrest and up to his crucifixion. The disciples struggled with unbelief during their walk with Jesus. There are a few accounts where Jesus seemed frustrated with their fears and inability to grasp faith. Jesus Tried to teach faith to the disciples during his time with them. On one occasion, he modeled how to respond to storms in life by faith. He modeled how to take authority over situations by speaking to the storm and calming the sea. He modeled how to not be immersed in what you see. Yet here was a huge storm brewing. It was not a sea storm no, but a storm nevertheless. This storm of persecution would require strong faith, this storm of persecution would require a boldness to take authority and not look at what was being presented in the natural. Open Door #9
Peter lacked a dedicated life of fasting and prayer. (as well as the other disciples)
Matthew 17:15-21 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Not only was lack of faith a problem; this lack of faith prevented Peter and the other disciples/apostles from effectively doing the work of the ministry. The disciples were unable to cast out a difficult demon during ministry. When asked why they were unable to do so, Jesus responded to them by saying that this particular problem demon would only leave by prayer and fasting. Whoa, we are given gems here. Jesus let us know that they were not adequately praying and fasting. We know that Jesus often slipped away in scripture to pray without the disciples. (Luke 4:42, Luke 5:16) But we also know that he must have fasted as well. It seems that the disciples had not fully embraced this disciple practice. We also know that in the garden of Gethsemane, he asked the disciples to watch and pray with him, yet he came back multiple times only to find them sleeping. The time in the garden was one of Jesus’ last moments with his disciples before his crucifixion. Open Door #10
He had a heart issue. ( Hardened hearts are linked to unbelief)
Mark 16:14- 14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
Hebrews 3:7-8- 7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
Hebrews 3:17-19- 17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
Jeremiah 17:5- Thus saith the Lord; cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.
In multiple places in scripture the lack of faith is also linked to a hard heart. Jesus rebuked his disciples for having hardened hearts, he also told us that the children of Israel were not able to enter rest due to hardened hearts and unbelief. We also see Peter’s fear of man, his trust in man’s systems, worry about the repercussions of going against the religious and governmental establishment put him in a place where his heart could have departed from the Lord. Open Door #11
Did Peter really know the Lord? Did he love the Lord? Was he born of him? Was he known by the Lord? Did he abide in Him? – Questionable
1 John 3:6- 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
John 14:15- 15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Matthew 22:36-40- 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.38 This is the first and great commandment.39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
1 John 2:29- 29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
1 John 5:18-21- 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
1 John 3:9- 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
Did Peter really know the Lord? Was he known by the Lord? Did he really abide in the Lord? According to the word, those that are born of God have the seed in us which does not allow us to sin. It doesn’t mean that we won’t sin, but we will certainly be convicted of it, repent, and quickly turn in the right direction. Those that sin, have not seen him nor know him. Peter was struggling in multiple areas friends. He was having a difficult time.
Scripture continues to tell us in multiple places that loving God is keeping his commandments. We only have two commandments to keep according to the New Testament, love the Lord with all of our heart minds and souls and love our neighbor as ourselves. (see above scripture reference Matthew 22) All of the rest, fall within these two commandments. The Holy Spirit that rests on the inside of us, gives us the power to follow the Lord’s commands, we can’t do it on our own. Open Door #12
Danger of Walking Unconverted
A believer walking unconverted is open to sifting. Satan’s mission statement can be found in John 10:10- 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Satan’s only mission and the mission of his workers is simply to kill, steal and destroy. He is relentless in doing his job so much that the word tells us that he roams the earth seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8) The Bible tells us that one of the things Satan does is accuse the brethren day and night. (Revelation 12:10)
What is sifting?
According to Strong’s Concordance, sifting means to shake, by inward agitation to try one’s faith to the verge of overthrow.
Satan’s job is to try and shake and agitate you until you give up your faith in Christ. Peter needed You the FULL armor of God to be able to withstand his sifting. Every open door must be closed as well as your faith strong and in tact to be able to even withstand his wiles. (Ephesians 6:11) The sifting is meant to devour. The sifting is meant to uproot you from your faith anchor and toss you to the wind.
Sifting is a farming term. Bundles of wheat, called sheaves are taken to the threshing floor. This threshing floor is the place where the sheaves are beaten with a rod. Some parts fall to the floor and other parts blow away. The part that blows away is no good, it is called the chaff. The second process of sifting is that the remaining parts that stayed on the threshing floor are moved to a basket or a sieve. Shaking occurs again, this time what shakes out to the floor, the heavier pieces are what will remain. The pieces that remain in the basket are not good. In other words, only the solid pieces could withstand the sifting. Could Peter withstand the sifting? Could his faith withstand the many open doors that were causing him to falter? Well, we know that he did withstand and so did the other disciples, they went on to carry the gospel message.
The question that we should be asking ourselves is do I have strong faith? Is my faith enough to withstand the trials and tribulations? If my faith was tested, would I remain faithful to the cause of Christ? And if the answer to that question is no, how do I make sure that my faith can withstand the difficult times?
What Is Conversion? I hope by now that you are seeing that Peter had many hidden open doors that caused him to be open for the adversary to legally come in like a flood to destroy him. Clearly, all of the open doors were an indication that Peter was NOT converted.
Converted in Strong’s Concordance means (G1994)- to turn to, to the worship of the true God, to cause to return, to bring back, to the obedience and love of God, to the love of wisdom and righteousness, to turn oneself about, turn back, come back.
I know that this is eye- opening. Peter, the beloved disciple/apostle needed to turn back, return, come back to the obedience and love of God, come back to love wisdom and righteousness, to turn himself about. Friends, this is the case with many of us today in the body of Christ. We must return, we must, come back into obedience and return to God’s love, wisdom and righteousness. Friends we must turn ourselves about and gird ourselves in faith.
The Bible tells us that we must put off the old man, the former conversation and be renewed in the spirit of our minds. Being renewed in our minds means that we have put away sin, lying, anger, malice, wrath and all other sin. The new man is called to holiness and righteousness according to this scripture ( Ephesians 4:22-32) So as eye-opening as it is friends, Peter was not quite renewed in his mind. Could that be you too?
Jesus’ Prayer for Peter
I know that looking at Peter’s open doors was a lot to take in, mainly because it makes us take a closer look at ourselves. It makes us realize that we can be church holy rollers, go every week, roll off Bible scriptures from our tongues with ease, feed the poor, go to midweek service, participate in ministry programs, do the work of the ministry and STILL NOT BE CONVERTED. I hope I have your attention. If the rock of the church had issues, friend we can be sure that we do to. Issues that only can be solved through our surrender to Christ and our full faith in Him. Faith friends has a look. Faith has a sound. Faith has action. Looking at Peter’s life makes us say, “Lord prune me; Lord help me shut all open doors; Lord help me build the faith needed to withstand difficult times; Lord help me”.
Jesus’ Prayer for Peter
Luke 22:31-32- 31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
Jesus knew that Peter was struggling. He knew that he was a potential candidate for Satan’s sifting. After we take a close look at all of Peter’s open doors, we know why. He knew that the other disciples/apostles were also struggling. Jesus’ prayer for Peter was simple. He prayed that his faith would not fail and that when he was converted, he would strengthen his brethren.
I hope that you caught the prayer. Peter needed a renewed mind. Peter needed to build his faith. Jesus didn’t say that Peter didn’t have faith, he said that Peter’s faith, the faith that he had, would not fail. Peter needed to learn how to stand in the faith that he had, he needed to be strengthened in his faith. Peter needed to be firm and unwavering in His faith in Christ. This strengthening would be part of the conversion process.
The Bible tells believers how to build faith. We are to build our faith by continuing to hear the word of God. (Romans 10:17) Somehow this hearing the word has a medicinal effect. This hearing the word does miraculous things in the spirit. The Bible tells us that the word is health to our bones and healing to our flesh. (Proverbs 3:8) Faith is believing and hoping even when you can not see. (Hebrews 11:1) Peter was going to have to stand on faith and in doing so, he would begin to bust down the open doors. Faith is the only thing that the Lord recognizes, we can’t even please Him without it. (Hebrews 11:6) Jesus was warning Peter that He must be in faith in order to be pleasing to the Lord, without it the kingdom of God would be in jeopardy even for the disciples who were necessary and crucial to carry on the gospel message after Jesus left the earth. So yes, you can confess Christ, just as Peter did. You can do the work of the ministry, cast out demons, and heal the sick in Jesus’ name. But friend, without strong faith, and without conversion, (real change) you are in danger, danger of being sifted. Lack of conversion means that you are likely to have many secret open doors that keep you unprotected.
Friend, the prayer that Jesus prayed for Peter, is his prayer he prays for us today as well. He prays that our faith will not fail. He prays that we will be able to withstand the storms, the purging, and the pruning. He prays that we will be able to endure, persevere and that our character will be able to withstand the shaking. He prays that we would be anchored in Him, that the storms, persecutions and whatever else this evil world brings will not move us from our position. (Psalm 112:6)
Being a disciple is learning to walk the Christian walk. Saying yes to Christ is just the beginning. Conversion must occur. Jesus’ earthly ministry was about 3 ½ years on the earth. Consider this, the disciples/apostles walked with him during this time. They believed, but there was a second phase that was needed, conversion.
